What causes the feeling of a lump in your throat when you are emotional

The sensation occurs when excess activity of the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system causes a certain muscle in the throat to go into spasm. This mus-cle helps keep the esophagus (the tube leading to the stomach) closed when you're not eating. So, when the muscle misbehaves, you feel you can hardly swallow.
